What is pet laser therapy?

Laser therapy uses light of various specific wavelengths to reach a target tissue such as a muscle or joint. The light waves enhance the biological activity of the cells in this area which releases natural endorphins and improves cellular energy.

How does Laser Therapy Work?

Therapeutic lasers use light waves to cause photobiomodulation or the alteration of cellular and tissue physiology. Laser Therapy affects tissue molecules that cause pain, inflammation, and nerve conduction while also increasing microcirculation, cellular activity, and growth factors. As a result, healing and tissue function is improved, and discomfort is reduced.

Laser Therapy can be used to assist with healing and pain management for a range of issues, including muscular pain, osteoarthritis, postoperative pain from incisions and wounds, and ligament or tendon injuries.

What should I expect at my pet’s Laser Therapy appointment?

During a treatment session, the handheld laser wand is slowly moved over the damaged tissue, producing a warm, pleasant sensation that most pets seem to enjoy and find relaxing. Sessions usually last 15 to 30 minutes, with the number of sessions and frequency of treatments dependent on the injury. Typically, laser therapy is initiated 3 times a week for the first couple weeks, then the frequency is reduced based on the issue being treated and your pet’s response.

Is Laser Therapy safe for my pet?

Laser therapy is very safe when performed correctly, using the proper settings and treatment durations. There is a risk of retinal damage if a pet or person looks directly into the laser. Anyone in the room during laser therapy must wear protective goggles and your pet’s eyes are shielded or directed away from the laser.
